Taj’s party had been a success, and he and his brothers were as drunk as drunk could be. It had taken many bottle of ale and wine to get them there, but the Brown brothers were inebriated beyond their wildest dreams.

To celebrate his birthday, Taj was in the corner with a beautiful Cherokee woman named Catori. She’d seductively whispered into Taj’s ear that her name meant “beyond words” and he could see how fitting that name was for her. She was gorgeous, with hair nearly to her feet, braided into three stitched braids, slanted, deep brown eyes that made him feel as if he were swimming in an abyss, and a set of lips shaped into the perfect cupid’s bow. She looked so good, Taj could eat her, if he were hungry.

Now, in his drunken state, the only thing he wanted to do was feel the inside of her. Taj ran his finger along her bottom lip. Under the shadows of the teepee, no one could see them. They were well out of the way, and any prying eyes would have to strain themselves to see one another.

“I know what you are.” Catori’s voice was but a whisper as Taj’s thumb spread across her lip.

“And what that be?” he retorted, wondering if she’d really known. Sam said that the Cherokee might have suspicions of what they were, but they’d never done anything to show them any real proof of what they could do. It would all just be rumor and hearsay.

“Child of Jumlin,” she eerily vocalized. Jumlin was the father of vampires, at least that’s what the Cherokee believed. Though they had never seen Jumlin, nor had they come across any of his offspring before, whispers of him being the first vampire throughout their tribes was something to be taken seriously. And when the Native Americans found that the colored men living alone, in an abandoned mansion, hardly came out of their home for food, to mingle, or for anything else, they grew suspicious.

Their clothes, at night, were stained in blood, along with their mocha lips. Catori kept watch at night, for intruders or outsiders, or anyone and anything that meant them harm. She was a beast with a bow and arrow, and since trading with the unmelanated, she’d learned how to aim and shoot a gun properly.

She, along with several others, had seen the Brown brothers. They were thankful that they were not targets, meals, nor on the other side or at risk of turning.

“Chile of Jumlin?” Taj asked, cocking his neck to the side, waiting for her to give an explanation.

“Those who are not Cherokee call them vam-pire,” she broke the word into syllables for emphasis, her lips separated, giving Taj a full view of her very wet tongue. Her eyes searched his, wondering if he was a vicious killer, if he would attack her. She was surrounded by family and had a knife just in the top of her boot if he tried anything. Though, she wasn’t sure if the knife would do anything to a child of Jumlin.
